The Employee Free Choice Act is currently being considered by Congress. This Act will allow our national affiliate, the Communication Workers of America, to more effectively organize private sector workers. Without a strong private sector labor movement, there can be no strong public sector and public safety labor movement.

That is why AZCOPS is asking you to please support the Employee Free Choice Act. You can do this easily by filling out an on-line petition. In the drop-down menu, select local number 7077. Ask other AZCOPS members to complete the form as well.

The Arizona Correctional Peace Officers Association rallied at the State Capitol Monday, July 13, to show their opposition to legislative efforts to privatize the state's prisons. Corrections officers were joined by AZCOPS leaders and union activists from CWA and AFL-CIO.

Arizona Attorney General Terry Goddard spoke at the rally and expressed his support for corrections officers in their efforts to stop prison privatization.

The group expressed its appreciation to Gov. Jan Brewer, who last month vetoed a line item from the proposed state budget that would have privatized prisons. While that provision was removed from the budget, discussions continue inside the Capitol and union leaders are encouraging members to remain vigilant as the legislative session continues.

"Our membership must continue to press the Governor's Office to permanently remove privatization from the discussion at the Capitol," said AZCOPS President Larry A. Lopez. "We must also thank Gov. Brewer for standing behind the men and women of public safety."
